Delta Records 146 Rape Cases

Statistics from the Delta State office of the Attorney-general and Ministry of Justice has shown that no fewer than 146 rape cases were recorded in the last four years.
Sources close to the Ministry told LEADERSHIP that the figures though not made public, was sequel to unconfirmed reports by a social network which reported that the state recorded no fewer than 265 cases in the last four years.
However, a Senior State Council at the Ministry of Justice hinted that many of the cases were perpetrated by married men, adding that the figures have been a source of concern to the Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan who ordered a thorough review of the suspects’ jail terms.
LEADERSHIP reliably gathered that worse hit areas included Ika North and South, Kwale, Ughelli and Asaba where there have been reported rape cases in the last few months.
But the State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General, Mr. Charles Ajuyah (SAN) had in a press chat in 2012, expressed worries over the increasing cases of rape and disclosed measures to reduce the menace.
He said, “there have been many cases of rapes we did not bring to the notice of the press. This is because most of the cases handled by the Ministry of Justice are special cases that needed to be thoroughly handled without bringing it to the notice of the public”.
