I want to quit ‘cos he impregnated my sister, wife tells court

A housewife,  Mariam Ayoola, has dragged her husband, Stephen, before a Grade 11 Customary Court in Osogbo, Osun State capital, seeking the dissolution of their 15-year-old marriage over alleged constant assault.

She also accused her  husband of impregnating her sister.

Mariam  told the court she was tired of their marriage because her husband was fond of  beating her.
“Our  union is blessed with four children; I’m  seeking divorce because of  Stephen’s constant beatings  due to excessive drinking which makes him aggressive,” she said.

But, Stephen, while responding, claimed they had five children and not four
Mariam further told the court that  the  fifth  child he was  claiming  was not his biological child.
“When I married him, my younger sister was living with us and he impregnated her.
“I left him because of this and moved out of the house.

“I  then met another man who impregnated me, but people intervened  in  our differences and I  returned to his house with the pregnancy.

“Now that I’m seeking  a divorce, he wants to claim another man’s child,” she said.
In his defence, Stephen denied impregnating his  sister-inlaw adding that his wife was wayward.
“I did not impregnate her sister, it is true that her younger sister and brother were both living with us, but I had nothing to do with her.

“We have been married for 15 years, suddenly things changed  and went from bad to worse.
She moved out but later returned when the differences  between us was ironed out.
“After five years, our pastor called me and told me I’m  not the father of our fourth child,” he said.

‘He makes loves to me in the presence of our grown-up children’

A Mapo Customary Court in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, has  dissolved a 17-year-old marriage between Rukayat and Rasaq Muniru, over  their diferences on sex.

Rukayat  told the court that Muniru was shameless  and found nothing wrong in having sex with her in the presence of their grown-up children.

“Muniru rented a room  in a face-face  apartment for me  and our four children, both male and female, at Olunloyo area of Ibadan, Oyo State capital, because he has married  another wife.

“He sees nothing wrong in having sex with me in their  presence as matured as they are.

“Whenever the children saw us making love, I used to remind him of the negative  effect  it might have on them and  task him on the need to  rent one more room for our privacy.

“Anytime I refused him sex, he beat the hell out of me, tore my clothes and  injured me.
“I have reported him to his parents on several occasions, but he has failed to change.

“Muniru doesn’t  cater for the children and doesn’t  even want to know whether they are educated or not,” Rukayat said.

The court president, Mr Ademola Odunade, in his judgment, held that the court dissolved the marriage because it considered the wellbeing of everyone  involved important.
“The court had fulfilled the mandatory adjournments, but Muniru still refused to show up which meant admission of guilt,” he said.

He ordered Muniru to pay a monthly feeding allowance of N6,000 as well as take responsibility for the education of the children.

A 29-year-old construction worker, Prince Isioma, has been arraigned by the Police before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court for allegedly molesting a 13-year-old girl around Abeokuta Expressway, Lagos State.
The victim was reportedly staying in her sister, in the same compound with the defendant. He carried out the act when no one was around, and lured her into his room, where he forcefully had sex with her.

Man, 38, defiles 10-year-old girl

Gafa Rasaq, 38, recently had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 10-year-old girl, under the disguise of buying food for her.
The girl, Kehinde Gbadamosi, was said to be a daughter to Rasaq’s neighbour, Nurudeen Gbadamosi, at Odo-Ona area, Shasha, Ibadan where the victim was defiled.
It was gathered that Rasaq lured the unsuspecting girl to his room under the pretence of buying food for her. Immediately the girl entered his apartment, Rasaq allegedly abused her.
The victim cried for help and with assistance from the neighbours was rushed to a nearby hospital in Moniya, Ibadan, for treatment while the suspect was apprehended and detained for protection.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, said it was unfortunate that adults still continued to take undue advantage of the minors.
Okuwobi-Ilobanafor said, “It’s an unfortunate incident, especially when an adult takesn advantage of vulnerability of minors to defile them. In this case, I want to advice parents that they should try to use whatever they have to feed their children instead of leaving their children at the mercy of predators who may put on the appearance of a sheep but may end up being a wolf raping these minors.
“So parents should take care of their children, feed them very well to fend off unnecessary enticement from human-wolves. It doesn’t have to be something expensive but they should ensure that their stomach is filled. The case has been ordered to be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), after which the suspect will be charged to court,” she said.

According to her, 77 persons out of the victims know the perpetrators while 15 do not know the perpetrators.
She lamented that 16 persons out of the perpetrators were family members of the victims.
The director also expressed dismay at the increasing cases of rape by Fulani cattle rearers in the rural areas.
Ezeilo called on traditional rulers, community leaders and community members to help guard against rape in the different communities.
The Manager of the centre in the state, Mrs Nkechi Nwabueze, said it was in collaboration with the Enugu State Government and the police to prosecute rapists.
Nwabueze said the centre, a gender response project, was set up to provide a rapid, holistic and high quality free medical, counseling and other support services to victims and survivors of sexual assault in the state.
According to her, the center is being supported by the Department for International Development (DFID) and Justice for All.
Some journalists who spoke at the event stressed the need for stakeholders to join hands in fighting the menace.
Mrs Gloria Orji-Emodi of Dream FM said the event was a welcome development, adding that it would help to sensitise the public.
“This is a good idea because it will help people, especially the victims, to know that there is a centre where to address their complaints,’’ she said.
On his part, Mr Dennis Agbo of the National Mirror called on media organisations to collaborate with one another to publicise rape cases.
“We do not need to hide the culprits. We need to make them know that all eyes are on them to reduce these cases,’’ he said. (NAN)

Poverty, Satan Made Me Rape Pastor’s Daughter – Robber-rapist, 55

Two weeks ago, the men of the Oyo State Police Command arrested a 55-year-old man who was part of an armed robbery gang who attacked a pastor’s residence, robbed and raped his daughter.
Luck did run out on the gang, though, when they were rounded up by the police.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP FRIDAY at the police headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, the 55- year- old man, identified as Ayodele Ademola, blamed Satan and poverty for both the robbery and the rape.
Ademola, a father of three children – a boy and two girls – revealed that the botched operation was the second in which he and his gang had participated in.

“It was the death of my wife that plunged me into serious poverty. I’ve been struggled to take care of the three children she left behind, but, I must confess to you, it has not been easy. I look around to find what I could do to get over this problem but to no avail.

“It was in the process that I met members of this robbery gang at a bus-stop. We talked and they introduced me to the business. I mean, armed robbery business. In short, it was poverty in my family that gave the devil opportunity to push me to armed robbery and raping.

“My appeal to the state and the federal governments, the Nigeria Police Force and Nigerians is that they should forgive me. I will never involve myself in all this rubbish again. I want all Nigerians to believe that it was poverty and [the] devil that pushed me to armed robbery and made me to rape the daughter of the pastor, my victim.

“The man of God, too, should, please, forgive me,” he pleaded.

The command’s deputy commissioner of police, administration, Sam Okalua, told LEADERSHIP FRIDAY that the items recovered from the gang included a Sony laptop, Samsung iPad, Apple iPad, three assorted cell phones, a Toyota Corolla with registration with number MK 382 AAA, a Mercedes Benz with registration number GGE 278 CK, six assorted wrist watches, N200,000 and other valuables.

The other defendants are suspects as Afolabi Oluwatobi (24), Morakinyo Olufemi (43), Ayodele Ademola (55) and Azeez Rafiu (27).

NSCDC parades man for allegedly killing concubine

The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has paraded a 45-year-old man for allegedly killing his concubine on the suspicion that she was dating another lover.

The suspect, Nwokeoma Ohuaba, a native of Akpama Ugba in Osisioma Local Government Area of the state was said to have been infuriated by the victim’s infidelity as he caught her with another man during an unscheduled visit.

He was said to have hit her in the head with a piece of iron in the ensuing altercation as he attempted to confront her while the alleged intruder fled.

Public Relations Officer of NSCDC in the state, Victor Ogbonnaya, who paraded the suspect on behalf of the State Commandant, Andy Dateer, said that the arrest was made following a tip-off.

He gave the victim’s name as Charity Onwutaebe, a widow and mother of three.

According to NSCDC, the suspect accused the victim of attacking him first but could not withstand his superior response, thus collapsing instantly as they fought each other.

She was said to have died later in a hospital at Obingwa where the suspect had hurriedly rushed her claiming she had a domestic accident.

According to NSCDC, when the suspect noticed that the victim might not survive, he disappeared and refused to come for her, but the hospital management tricked him by telling him that she had recovered and needed provision and food and when he came, he was arrested.

NSCDC said the suspect would be handed over to the police for further investigations and prosecution. Later in an interview, the suspect claimed that the deceased was his wife and not his concubine as alleged by NSCDC, adding that he married her after the death of his first wife.

He said they were quarrelling over a phone when she first hit him with the iron but when he retaliated she collapsed.

The suspect also denied absconding but explained he only went to mobilise for funds after making an initial deposit of N5, 000 out of the N10, 000 he was asked to pay, but upon his return, the victim had passed on.

Driver gags, rapes 15-year-old nursing mother

When 15-year-old Loveth (not real name) started living as a maid with one Madam Elizabeth, the expectations of her parents was for her to have a fresh start in life. For a teenage mother who had gone through a lot in the last few months, living with a guardian at No. 18, Ogo-Oluwa Street, off Sabo Bus-Stop, Ojodu Berger, Lagos, was not only a dream come true, but a second chance to put the broken pieces of her life together.

rape-victim-3

But the desire to have a fresh start seems to be vanishing into thin air as the unexpected happened recently, when her guardian’s driver, Nelson Eke, allegedly tied her up and raped her after her madam went to church.

How it happened

Crime Alert learnt that on that fateful day, her guardian reportedly went to church by public transport after her driver claimed that the car had suddenly developed a fault, without anyone suspecting he had an ulterior motive. The woman gave the driver N6,000 with which to repair the car before leaving for church and asked him to bring it to church after fixing it.

Immediately madam left the house, instead of taking the vehicle to the mechanic, he came inside and asked the victim to give him drinking water, which she did before he allegedly tied her and raped her, after which he took the car to the mechanic for repairs.

A family source told Crime Alert, “At about 8am when Loveth was taking breakfast downstairs after madam left the house for church, Uncle Nelson (madam’s driver) requested for drinking water.

She reportedly left her food, went upstairs to get him water. After giving him water, she came back to the kitchen downstairs, carried her food to the dining area to continue eating when Nelson came inside and poured engine oil into her cup of tea and asked her to drink it.

“Initially, she refused to drink it but he pushed the chair where she was sitting down and she fell, hitting her head on the floor. He then poured the tea into her mouth forcefully. As she struggled to run, she fell down. He then used his shoe to press her hand down to the ground. When she tried shouting, he used her wrapper to cover her mouth, tied the other hand as well and raped her.”

It was gathered that while she was struggling to loosen herself, one of the dining chairs fell on her chest. She was there till her madam came back at about 2pm.

Lamentation

The family source lamented the fate that befell Loveth: “For goodness sake, Loveth is a nursing mother trying to make amends for her past mistake only for this man to rape her. She works as a maid for her madam who takes good care of her and her baby.”

It was further gathered that when her madam returned from church, she saw the victim upstairs, tied down and eventually reported the case to the police. The victim was also taken to the hospital where tests were carried out.

Although the suspect, Nelson, agreed to have had carnal knowledge of her, he denied using her wrapper to tie her up. The case is still being investigated by men of the State CID, Panti, in Lagos.

Controversy as minor accuses blind guardian of rape

Rape

The police in Lagos are investigating a visually impaired man who has been accused of rape by a 12-year-old minor (names withheld).
While some policemen at the Satellite Town Police Division found it difficult to believe that a “blind man” was capable of raping someone who had no problem with her sight, others insisted that the minor was too young to lie.
The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria, a non-governmental organisation, felt that the indecision by the police was a way to bury the case at the expense of the victim.
PUNCH Metro gathered that the minor started work as housemaid with the visually-impaired man, identified simply as Kingsley, in January 2014. It was said that the agreement was that Kingsley, who is married with three children, would sponsor the minor through school while she would assist the household with domestic chores.
Trouble, however, started when the minor was unceremoniously returned to her aunt last month on account of what her guardians termed her unruly behaviour and her tendency to always run away from home whenever she was scolded for wrongdoing.
But the minor told the aunt that she ran away from home after Kingsley raped her. The furious aunt was said to have invited the police at the Satellite Town Police Division and Kingsley was arrested.
Narrating the incident to the police, the minor said, “I ran away from home because daddy (Kingsley) attempted to rape me a second time.
“Before I ran away he had called me into his room to help him read a text message from his phone. In the process, he forcefully had sex with me. I ran away when he attempted to rape me another time.”
But the suspect said the minor’s claim was false. He wondered how possible it was for a blind man to rape a girl who could have escaped.

He told PUNCH Metro that the minor was scolded for wrongdoing and she did not return until the next day.

Kingsley said, “The rape was an afterthought by the minor’s aunt to punish me for returning her unceremoniously. It is a set up. The girl in question could hardly read or write. As a blind person, my phone is enabled with a software package that enables me to make calls and read text messages without assistance. When she ran away, it was our landlord that brought her the following day. She did not mention anything about rape as her reason for running away.

“She and her aunt must have cooked up the rape issue to punish me. The medical test that allegedly proved that she was defiled was conducted when doctors were on strike. I will want this matter to be taken to court because my name has been smeared.”

However, NOPRIN said the police had compromised on the investigation.

A statement by NOPRIN National Coordinator, Okechukwu Nwanguma, said, “Curiously, the police are the ones echoing the argument that the alleged rapist is visually impaired as if that will negate the possibility that he could have committed the offence.”

But the state Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Lelma Kolle, denied any complicity by the police, saying justice would take its course.

He said, “The matter was first reported at the Satellite Police Division and the suspect was arrested. He was granted bail because of his condition. The incident has been transferred and is still under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department.”

Why men rape

She has interviewed hundreds of rapists across the globe and heard tales of a kind of horror that makes the blood boil.
South African professor Rachel Jewkes believes the only way to break the cycle of sexual violence against women is to understand why it happens in the first place.
"The reasons why men rape in South Africa are the same reasons they rape here and the most common statements really amount to notions of sexual entitlement," she said.
Professor Jewkes, the director of one of the largest sexual violence research centres in the world, is in Melbourne as a guest of the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine to speak at its biennial oration on Thursday night and will also meet with the federal government to talk policy.
"We haven't got perpetration research from Australia, this is something that is emerging in the last few days of conversation, it's definitely one of the gaps," she said.
That gap was alarming in post-apartheid South Africa when she uncovered the prevalence of rape in what was supposed to be research into teenage pregnancy in 1995.
"We interviewed 24 of them and 23 of them told us stories of basically rape and violence from partners," Professor Jewkes said.
That spawned interviews with perpetrators in South Africa, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Bangladesh.
It is a field difficult to view without emotion, and questions like "Have you ever slapped a woman?" and "Have you ever choked or burnt or pushed a woman?" avoided words like "violence" and "abuse".
Most of the almost 11,000 men interviewed were done by way of questionnaire and anonymously in order to extract information that aimed to one day prevent crimes happening in the first place.
"It's actually much easier than you'd ever imagine to get men to tell you about violence," Professor Jewkes said.
"There are a lot of men who are violent towards women who, from their framework, feel what they did was justified."
Responses like "I wanted to have sex so I made her have sex with me" were common.
"It comes from our society and from ideas around masculinity," Professor Jewkes said.
"The assumption in many societies is that women should come under men's control so when a man decrees he wants something like sex he can go and have it."
There are days she has blinding anger and heartbreak, particularly when she hears a young women's first foothold into a relationship is an experience of violence and appalling control.
"The thing that keeps you going when you work in the field is a sense that the world can be different, that you can make it different, that you can stop these things from happening," she said.
