The messy marital crisis currently tearing apart the troubled home of torch-light-carrying musician, Zaaki Azzay, has taken a new dimension.
Fresh information reaching EE, has it that Project Alert, a Non Governmental Organisation concerned with violence against women and other domestic issues has waded into the alleged domestic violence and incessant use of police to threaten Hadiza, the estranged wife of the singer and mother of their three children .
A petition written by the NGO’s legal officer, Benjamin Odeh ESQ and addressed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 2, Onikan Lagos, stated thus:
“Our client informed us that since the inception of her marriage, she has lived perpetually under constant assaults, physical violence and threats to her life by Mr. Zaaki-Azzay which she never condoned.
Our client further narrated that Mr. Zaaki-Azzay who is a man of extreme ungovernable temper had used various dangerous objects on her including an iron on the 16th of April, 2012 which led to her running out of their matrimonial home with two of her children for the safety of her life.
Surprisingly, Mr Zaaki has resorted to the use of officers and men of the Nigeria Police at Pedro Police Station, Shomolu to harass and intimidate our client by meddling in a matter that is purely civil ... Not satisfied with the manipulation of the Police at Pedro Police Station, Mr Zaaki-Azzay has again petitioned the State Command in Ikeja against our client for the abduction of her own biological children.
When Mrs. Zaaki-Azzay presented herself for questioning at the Lagos State Police Command in Ikeja, she was subjected to humiliations and eventually detained and it took the intervention of her counsel to effect her release with stern warning to make herself and the children available unfailingly at the Command on the 15th of August 2012, for discussion.”
The petition with one of the subtitles, ‘Attempt to use the officers and men of the Nigerian Police at Special Investigation Bureau under the Lagos State Command, Ikeja to commit unconstitutional, illegal, unlawful and unwarranted invasion of the rights of Mrs. Hadiza Zaaki by Mr. Zaaki-Azzay… ’ further reads: “We make bold to say that the police ought to protect our client as well as the children of the marriage until the determination of the case in the court.
“It is undemocratic, wicked, diabolical and intolerable. Our client shall pursue justice till the zenith of her will using all fiber of her being to seek all available legal means to resist all attempts to suppress, coarse, and intimidate her”.
Project Alert on Violence Against Women’s Right Organisation was established in 1999, to defend the rights of women and young girls in the society.
