Four years rape: Court adjourns for legal advice

The alleged four years rape of a 13-year-old girl by a 56-year-old man, Chukwudi Anonike, has been referred to the Directorate of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

An Ebute Meta Court’s magistrate, Ms S.O Solebo, said the state had decided that cases involving rape, armed robbery and murder should first go through the DPP before trial.

PUNCH Metro had reported on December 3, 2013 that Anonike and the victim lived on Ola Street, Ikotun area of Lagos where the incident happened.

The underage girl was said to be a regular visitor to the defendant’s room, and each time she visited, Anonike allegedly had sex with her.

The sexual relationship reportedly lasted for four years before it was discovered on November 2, 2013 by the victim’s sister.

The police said the sexual intercourse caused damage to the girl’s private part.

Anonike was subsequently arrested and arraigned on one count of rape.

Upon his arraignment on December 2, 2013, he was admitted to bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties each in like sum.

When the matter came up for mention on Wednesday, the victim, her sister, and the defendant were in court.

The defence counsel appealed for proof of evidence from the police prosecutor, Inspector Richard Odigwe, after the latter asked for a trial date for the case.

The magistrate however said, “The case has to be referred to the DPP for legal advice. We have been instructed that cases involving rape, armed robbery, murder should be referred to the DPP before we begin trial on them.”

The matter was subsequently adjourned till February 7, 2014 for DPP’s advice.
