Court remands man for allegedly raping minor

An FCT Chief Magistrates’ Court in Karu on Thursday ordered one Abubakar Lawal to be remanded in prison custody for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl.

Chief Magistrate Hadiza Shagari remanded the accused after he pleaded not guilty to one count of rape charge.

Shagari ordered that the accused be remanded until April 23 for commencement of trial.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Umar Mohammed of the Karu police station, had told the court that Lawal, 27, raped the minor at Cutland Garden, Karu, Abuja.

Mohammed said that one Ado Salisu, a security guard attached to the garden, saw the minor sleeping under a tree because she had lost her way.

According to him, Salisu offered the girl a room to sleep pending when he would be free to take her to the police station.

He alleged that Lawal sneaked into the room when the guard had returned to his duty post and carried out the act.

“Salisu heard the girl shouting for help and he rushed into the room to meet the accused naked on top of the girl.

“The case was reported at the station on March 23 by the victim through the help of Ado and some neighbours,” he stated.

The offence, according to him, contravened Section 282 of the Penal Code.

Mohammed urged the court to deny the accused bail on the grounds that the offence was not ordinarily bailable and carries a life imprisonment upon conviction.
