The police command in Kwara State has arrested 12 students of some tertiary institutions in the state for alleged rape cases.
The state police commissioner, Mr. Ambrose Aisabor, made this known when he visited the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor AbdulGaniyu Ambali in his office.
Aisabor lamented that most criminal activities were being committed by undergraduates and able-bodied youths and challenged universities in the country to join hands with the police in fighting crime.
While noting that security is a collective responsibility, he called on students, lecturers and traditional rulers, among others, to collaborate with the force in reducing the menace of insecurity.
“When you go abroad, you discover that the success of their police is built on information sharing by the public. Information is vital to the police. The police cannot be effective without credible information. Development takes place only in an atmosphere of peace and that is why security is a collective responsibility. The police need the universities as much as the universities need the police. We should work harmoniously,” Aisabor added.
Responding, Ambali described the new police commissioner as a symbol of hope for the police and the nation because of his track record, emphasising that the police is crucial to the sustenance of peace and harmony in the country.
