Beware! Rape of minors on the increase — NHRC

The National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, today, raised alarm over the increasing cases of rape in the country, stressing that most of the recently reported incidents involved the defilement of minors by adults.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prof Ben Angwe, who made the observation in Abuja yesterday, accordingly urged the Police High Command to be more vigilant in their investigations with a view to bringing the culprits to book.

Receiving the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission, John Kennedy Opara who paid a courtesy visit to the NHRC yesterday, Angwe, said there was the need for religious organizations and the Christian Pilgrims Commission to cooperate with the right body in its quest towards ensuring that perpetrators of such heinous crime are prosecuted and  jailed.

Angwe said: “I wish to condemn in very strong terms the increasing cases of rape in the country especially the defilement of minors. Just last week, it was reported  that  a girl of eight years was allegedly raped to death by unknown persons in Ikot Ekang, Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa-Ibom State.

”I wish to call on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar to commence an immediate investigation into the case in question and other related matters to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book”.

While calling on the Akwa-Ibom State office of the NHRC to also commence immediate investigation into the matter, Prof. Angwe, implored parents and guardians to cooperate with the Commission by always feeling free to report rape cases involving their wards, saying some times, parents themselves, scuttle effort by security and law enforcement agents to conduct full scale investigation on such rape cases.

”God used John Kennedy Opara as an instrument of nature; he is a wonderful agent of God. Since his leadership of the Nigerian Pilgrims Commission, Nigerians have never had the usual ugly experience of the past where they are always stranded in the holy land.

“Today Nigeria is going through a very serious crisis due to the killing of humans by their fellow humans. We are committed to removing the absurdity of these killings and we urge the Christian Pilgrims Commission to continue to work on the inner being of human beings to end the incessant killings. We will work tirelessly to ensure that we have peace in this country.”
