Three teenagers arraigned for attempted rape

The police on Thursday arraigned three teenagers before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly attempting to rape a 17-year-old girl.

The accused, Opeyemi Sabitu, (17), Kudus Balogun, (15), and Moshood Tajudeen, (14), residents of Ajangbadi area of Ojo,Lagos are facing a four-count charge of attempted rape, stealing, assault and conspiracy.

The Prosecutor, ASP Soji Ojaokomo, said the accused forcefully held their victim and dragged her to an isolated area in an attempt to rape her.

“The accused punched the under-aged girl in their attempt to rape her, but she was rescued by passers-by who were waiting to board vehicle.

“The accused assaulted their victim by holding her mouth and pushing her to the ground in an attempt to rape her,’’ he told the court.

Ojaokomo also alleged that the accused stole N100 from their victim while molesting her.

“The distress alarm that was raised by the victim attracted passers-by and people around who arrested the accused and handed them over to the police.’’

The prosecutor said the offence was committed on Jan. 26 at 5.00 a.m. at Y.S Bus Stop, Ajangbadi, Ojo, a Lagos suburb.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 170, 135, 285 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs Oluyemisi Adelaja, granted each of the accused bail in the sum of N20,000 with one surety each in like sum.

She said the sureties must show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of the bail condition.

The case was adjourned to March 26 for mention.
